subconscious effect of daylight

It looks like a room where daylight is falling on the walls, but it is not!

Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken’s intention was with this project to take elements of his work and theories concerning daylight and incorporate them directly into architecture. The installation is located in the entrance of an office building in Stockholm. As both the entrance and staircase have no natural light, it was important for him, to replicate the positive sensation of sunlight. The installation consists of over 6000 LEDs.

” When you have daylight in a room you get information of something outside. This creates a feeling of an expanded perceived space. A sensation of freedom” a phrase by Daniel Rybakken.

His work seems and is so quiet, because at first sight everything looks normal and only after a second look you see the optical illusion. LOVE IT! His earlier work has also a wonderful name ” subconscious effect of daylight”. For sure his idea is going to be useful for underground stations, cellar apartments and every other dark room and especially for the grey Berlin times which starts now.

I’m doing my first basement design at the moment and this has made me think again about the lighting. Thanks

I have a few good friends who are photographers, and I’m always baffled at their understanding of light and shadows…

    This is beautiful!

Very interesting. I would be very interested to read a study after a winter of use to see the benefits. I’m sure it helps.

My Apartment, gets sun all day, and at night It gets the moon light as well. I also painted parts of my walls gold, which helps to reflect the sunlight. At work I get nothing but “Fake” light, and it sucks! I feel bad for my students having to sit in these classrooms with florescent lights all day.

What a great idea. No doubt sunlight is powerful for the psyche.

Yes, the illusion does appear to create space and I love that. Your work is magnificent and ingenius.

So original! Wonderful idea! Daylight coming in through windows isn’t something one usually thinks about, but when it’s not there you wish it was there. It does provide a sense of comfort and security. Amazing work!

Light slanting through the window and cast onto a wall, but not. Creative optical illusion to psychologically open a space. Definitely following your future posts!

  10. kirpa5 Avatar

Wow what a amazing concept! it actually appears as if light is coming into the room.

If the LEDs could move along a strip across the wall as the day progressed, that would be even cooler!

That’s what I wanted to suggest, too! That would be absolutely amazing and thrilling.

Rybakken has produced a clever, well-executed art installation. I wonder if I would be disappointed to experience it in a building though? It looks like a beautiful shaft of sunlight is entering the space, but upon closer inspection, it’s just a trick.

Rybakken states that “when you have daylight in a room you get information of something outside. This creates a feeling of an expanded perceived space. A sensation of freedom.” Surely an LED panel designed to mimic sunlight can only ever mimic the connection and sensation of freedom real sunlight creates?

    1. DoF@theinfill Avatar

Does that matter? We live in the shadow of a hill over which the sun won’t rise now for the next 6-8 weeks. I’m seriously thinking of adding an LED panel of some sort to my work space as I reckon mimicking will be enough for my SAD psyche. What I produce by way of lighting, now that will be designed to mimic (probably poorly) Daniel Rybakken’s intentions. I let you know how it goes

      1. Panfilo Castaldi Avatar

Fair point… I take it you live far north somewhere? Norway maybe? In Australia, we tend to have the opposite problem – too much sunlight!

Wow, I love it! As a Swede I am obsessed with light (compared to my non-Swedish friends) and loathe spending time in rooms without natural light, such as the classrooms here in Asia. I have often thought there must be better ways of lighting rooms in this day and age and it seems DR has found it. Great work!

This work is a perfect proof for a theory: everything, a whole world is inside us and whatever you feel and think about your environment, is only your mind’s imagination.
